Merry Christmas from all of us at LaPlante Home Services.
We hope your holidays are full of good food, people you’re happy to see, and at least one morning where you don’t have to be anywhere. That your tree looks the way you wanted it to. That the cookies turned out. That someone else volunteers to do the dishes.
We hope your house is warm, your power stays on, and you get a little peace and quiet somewhere in the middle of it all.
And if you’re one of those families dealing with a tough year, or missing someone at the table, or just glad to get through December—we hope you find some comfort where you can. The holidays aren’t always easy.
The Two Kinds of Snow
Snow on Christmas Eve is the kind we all want. It’s festive, it makes everything feel right, and nobody minds shoveling it.
Snow on December 27th is a different animal. That’s the kind that knocks out power, turns your driveway into a skating rink, and reminds you that your roof rake is still buried somewhere in the garage.
A Few Practical Things Worth Grabbing
If you’re out shopping this week and want to cross some practical items off your list while you’re at it:
Grab some pet-safe ice melt instead of regular rock salt. Your dog’s paws and your grass will thank you come spring. Look for products with calcium chloride or magnesium chloride instead of sodium chloride.
Pick up pipe insulation if you’ve got exposed pipes in the basement or crawl space. Takes twenty minutes to wrap them, saves you from dealing with a burst pipe in January. The Red Cross has good guidance on protecting pipes from freezing.
Make sure you’ve got a decent snow shovel. The one that cracked last year doesn’t count.
The Gift Your House Would Pick
A standby generator isn’t exactly gift-wrap material. But when the power goes out for three days in January and you’ve got heat, lights, and a working refrigerator while your neighbors are figuring out hotel rooms? Your house would definitely put that on its wish list.
From Our Home to Yours
We’ve been working in Southern Maine homes for over 50 years now. We know what winter here looks like, and we know January and February have plans.

Merry Christmas from Andrea & Shawn, your partners in homeownership and LaPlante!
