Mini Split & Ductless AC Frequently Asked Questions
Do heat pumps really work in Maine winters?
Modern heat pumps absolutely work in Maine winters. They’re efficient, they heat well when it’s cold, and they give you AC in summer. We install them all the time.
Is spring really the best time to think about AC?
Yes. By June, everyone’s calling about AC and schedules are packed. Spring gives you time to research heat pumps, get quotes, and schedule installation before the rush. Plus you’re not making decisions while you’re already sweating.
What is a central air conditioning system?
A central air conditioning system uses outdoor compressors which connect to one indoor heating unit sending air through ducts to every room in the house.
What are some disadvantages of a central air conditioning system?
One disadvantage is the complicated installation process. The installation process for a central A/C system can be very complicated, especially if there is no existing ductwork in the home. A lack of existing duct work can mean the installation process will require walls to be ripped down and ceilings to be torn open. This is, of course, a messy and expensive process.
Another is the same temperature in every room of the house. Central A/C units are designed to provide cool temperature to each room in the home. This can be highly inefficient because you’ll be cooling an empty room much of the time.
What is a ductless A/C or mini-split system?
A ductless A/C or mini-split system operates with an outdoor compressor unit connected to a maximum of eight indoor units to distribute individually controlled air conditioning in every room of your house. Also known as “one of those cool looking air conditioning units that hangs on the wall.”
What are the advantages of a mini split system?
One advantage is the flexible climate control. Since each room can have its own mini-split unit, you can have flexibility in your temperature from room to room. This differs from central A/C units which distribute cool air throughout the entire house.
Another advantage is that there are no ducts to install and clean. Because a ductless A/C mini split system does not require ducts, the installation process can be much less expensive and the maintenance much more straightforward.
Lastly they are energy efficient. Since ductless mini split A/C units are designed to cool rooms individually, they are much more energy efficient than central A/C units which cool the entire house at once.
Can I finance my ductless A/C system with LaPlante?
Yes, you absolutely can finance your ductless A/C system with LaPlante! Since many people do not want to part with all the cash to pay for a mini split A/C unit right up front, we have provided financing options for these systems.
