Learn More About Efficiency Maine

Two people in blue hoodies install large outdoor heat pump units on a metal stand beside a house in Scarborough, ME, with green bushes.

How Do Heat Pumps Work?

Instead of using a fuel source like propane or oil, heat pumps use electricity to heat and cool your home.

There are two main parts to the heat pump system.  An outdoor compressor unit, and a refrigerant and piping system powered by an indoor fan wall unit.

During winter, the outdoor unit collects and compresses low temperature heat from the ground or air, and moves it indoors to heat your home. In the summer, the process is reversed by drawing heat energy from inside your house and sending it out through the outdoor compressor.

We believe installing a heat pump is the best way to keep you and your family uncommonly comfortable all year long, regardless of how extreme the weather may get.

They also save you money! Heat pumps can cover as much space as an air conditioner or heating system at a much lower cost. It is estimated that heat pumps can save people up to 50% of what they usually pay for conventional heating or cooling.

AND heat pumps are environmentally friendly, which is important to all of us here at LaPlante Electric. The Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority says heat pumps are one of the most energy-efficient ways of heating and cooling your home.

We needed to have a plumbing pipe adjusted up to provide better clearance for a drop ceiling installation in our basement. Garrett showed up for the consult 5/1/26 on schedule and determined that he could handle the task right then and there! He was personable and done with the job in less than an hour. I'm sure the fix was simple enough but to us it eliminated a huge hurdle. If you would have 4 more people like Garrett, you'd have a stellar plumbing team! Also, a team from LaPlante installed our new heat pumps earlier in April and they were absolutely fantastic guys! Seamless from start to finish! Steve Bergeron was a great salesperson too! It felt like he was just a friend visiting that day and also made sure that we secured our rebate from efficiency Maine which was approved and check on its way!! Thank you!!!

LaPlante Electric and Plumbing is my go-to business for the work I need to have done around the house that requires careful attention if it involves water and/or electricity. From the sales rep, Ashton, to the technicians who came out to do the jobs (Neva for electric and Garrett and Diondre for plumbing), everyone with whom I spoke and met were professional, prompt, pleasant and thorough in their work. I cannot thank LaPlante enough for the jobs well done!

Top notch service! The electrician knew her business and sorted out everything in record time. Trouble shooting can be complicated with electrical circuits and she caught everything so quickly…impressive. En plus, she put on shoe protectors upon entering the house and had the cleanest, neatest tool kit I’ve ever seen! Great response from the admin staff when making the appt. Highly recommended!

Garret and Deandre were professional and knowledgeable and explained everything they needed to do and how they fixed the problems. Also educated me on how to diagnose any further issues if they arise and how I can possibly fix them myself in the future. I was blown away on how friendly they were as well. I will be using your company from now on if needed.

We had an annual generator maintenance done today. The scheduling was fast, the arrival time given was within a 2-hr period and the service man arrived right at the start of the window and gave an accurate estimate of how long it would take. He answered all of our questions and was very courteous and helpful. We are happy with the service provided.

Wayne was really professional and explained everything fully. I was amazed that the heating appliance was picked up for me. There was work that needed to be done on electrical panel that I never anticipated that took a lot of extra time. Wayne was really attentive to all details, did beautiful clean work. Very satisfied that he helped me meet my goals. I'm planning to repeat this same work in another room, and very definitely will I be calling upon your organization to do the work. It will be easier next time since there is a new electrical panel in place. thank you. Susan Clements

Thank you Alain! Second trip out for Alain and both times very impressed with him! Very efficient, thorough, professional just as the first time! Left the job site clean and orderly which is greatly appreciated! I appreciate his dedication to resolving my hot water issues. Again, thank you so very much!

It is wonderful to deal with "PROS". After the last power outage, I contacted LaPlante about a generator purchase and installation after reading their many, impressive five-star reviews. I told my two next-door neighbors about it and they asked to sit in. Joseph DeCarlo came out, met with us, told us how LaPlante works, what brands they carried, the warranties offered and the installation process. After discussing Kohler, Generac and Briggs & Stratton, all three of us selected Kohler because it was offering a 10-year warranty, twice their normal 5-year warranty. Other than a minor hiccup with the gas connection which was carefully resolved, the install went well. I was especially impressed with the neatness of the electrical work as well as the landscape work. I don't remember all the names who worked on our job but William, Troy, Cory, James and David deserve special mention. All of LaPlante's team from sales through scheduling and installation were efficient, personable and professional. I think my neighbors feel the same way.

This will be a bit lengthy because we don’t want to miss any part of the review. First of all, my hubby and I had been considering getting a heat pump for a long time but were always nervous about the amount of money it would cost and how we, our home and pets would be treated during the install. But my hubby looked online and found LaPlante Electric. They said someone could come down and give us information and answer questions we had for FREE . We figured why not, we don’t have anything to lose. They sent Matthew within a couple of days to see us. He was great and very knowledgeable. He took our info to the planners/designers and he got back in touch quickly with answers. We had questions and they were answered very fast. We were impressed with that part so we went ahead and started the process. They had a bank all set up to get financing and also helped with the rebate we would get from Efficiency Maine. It was all set up and available on their website. Can’t get much easier than that. Once we knew cost and other info we called Matthew to schedule it. They were super busy so it was a good two months before they could come and install it. On install day we got a text and an email saying they were on their way. They got here at exactly when they said they would and introduced themselves. Then two more vehicles pulled up with more guys, there were 6-7 guys here to do the install! First, we noticed how clean cut, appropriately dressed and polite they were. They were very efficient, they had two guys here, two guys there, etc. They never made us feel like they were rushing and offered to stop and answer any questions along the way. My hubby is very inquisitive so he watched different parts of it and they welcomed that. We never felt like we needed to “watch over” them. They did very little talking, really only about the install. They never once raised their voices or cussed. They were really focused and so quiet you could barely hear any work going on in our house and even outside they were very quiet. They were very friendly and nice to our pets too. Andrew stopped and pet our Yorkie, Milo, a few times. They would say “hi pup” or “hey there” or something like that when passing by. They were very professional in every way possible. One worker went around with a mini-shop vac and cleaned up EVERYTHING, even the basement area was spotless. Outside there was nothing (no styrofoam pieces, wood shavings or scraps were left). Honestly, it was like they were never even here. At the end they explained how to operate the heat pump, answered any questions we had and said “you’re a part of the LaPlante family now so if you need anything in the future don’t hesitate to call”. LaPlante is exceptional from the receptionist to the owners and everyone in between. We would have them come again for all our needs in the future. I wish more companies cared as much about their customers as much as LaPlante does. We would give them 10 stars if we could. Thank you very much for a great installation! Happy Customers, Ray and Kristie M. ADDITIONAL: We just wanted to add to our previous review and say a HUGE thank you again. I called in and spoke with the Secretary/Receptionist and the person I was hoping to speak with was in a meeting. She offered to help me by taking a message (we know how that goes sometimes- forgotten about). It was a lengthy and in depth message and she said she’d pass it along to the correct person. A few days went by and we received a lovely letter in the mail. It certainly answered the question we had. Once again they’ve gone above and beyond our expectations. And their system of communication is obviously top notch. There is a lot of pride from everyone who works at LaPlante and it shows!

Heat Pump FAQs

Do heat pumps really work in Maine winters?

Modern heat pumps absolutely work in Maine winters. They’re efficient, they heat well when it’s cold, and they give you AC in summer. We install them all the time.

Is spring really the best time to think about AC?

Yes. By June, everyone’s calling about AC and schedules are packed. Spring gives you time to research heat pumps, get quotes, and schedule installation before the rush. Plus you’re not making decisions while you’re already sweating.

Should I actually be worried about the cold room in my house?

Depends. If it’s an addition with poor insulation, that’s one thing. If your heating system can’t keep up, that’s another. Heat pumps with zone control can fix uneven heating without replacing your whole system. Worth talking through if it’s driving you crazy.

What’s the most important thing I can do to extend my heating system’s life?

Change your filters regularly and schedule annual professional maintenance. According to the Air Conditioning Contractors of America, regular maintenance can extend equipment life by years and prevent 95% of heating system failures.

Should I consider a heat pump instead of replacing my furnace or boiler?

Heat pumps are worth considering, especially in Maine where Efficiency Maine offers rebates. They provide both heating and cooling and can be more efficient than traditional systems. The Department of Energy explains that modern heat pumps work efficiently even in cold climates. We can help you evaluate if it’s the right choice for your home.

Can you tell me how much life my system has left?

We can give you a good assessment based on age, condition, and performance. We can’t predict the exact date it’ll fail, but we can tell you if you’re looking at years, months, or “probably shouldn’t wait much longer.”

Should I get my heating system serviced even if nothing seems wrong?

Yes. Annual maintenance catches problems early, keeps your system running efficiently, and extends its lifespan. It’s cheaper than emergency repairs and way cheaper than early replacement. ENERGY STAR recommends scheduling maintenance before each heating season.

What happens if my heating system fails in the middle of winter?

We handle emergency heating repairs year-round. But emergency service during peak season means you’re competing with everyone else whose system just failed. Plan ahead when you can.

How much does furnace or boiler replacement cost?

Depends on the system type, size, and complexity of the install. We give you a clear quote before we start so there are no surprises. And we can talk through financing options if you need them.

How long should a furnace or boiler last?

Furnaces typically last 15-20 years. Boilers can last 15-25 years, sometimes longer with good maintenance. But lifespan depends on the quality of the unit, proper installation, and regular maintenance.Consumer Reports notes that well-maintained systems can exceed these averages.

What are the benefits of a heat pump water heater?

  • Increased efficiency: Just how much more efficient can a heat pump water heater be? According to the US Departmetn of Energy, it can be 2 to 3 times more energy efficient!
  • Dehumidifies and cools: Since heat pump water heaters pull heat from their surrounding area, they tend to cool and dehumidify the space around them. If your basement has a habit of getting hot and muggy when the washer and dryer are running, and with kids, they’re almost always in use, a heat pump water heater can help alleviate that discomfort! It can also pull from the excess heat in your furnace creates during the winter.
  • Environmentally friendly: Heat pump water heaters use less energy and give off zero emissions, making them one of the most environmentally friendly ways to heat your water. Since they aren’t generating their own heat, they don’t need gas at all, which lowers your gas bill, too! If all water heaters sold in the US were energy-star-rated heat pump water heaters, 150 billion pounds of emissions would be prevented.
  • Reduced Energy Bill: Reduced energy use + no gas consumption = lower utility bills and a happy wallet. Studies have shown that just by switching to a water heater heat pump the average household of four saves approximately $550 a year on their electric bill when compared to a standard electric water heater!
  • Rebates and Tax Credits: There’s no denying the environmental benefits of installing a heat pump water heater in your home. That’s why Efficiency Maine and the federal government have rebates and tax credits to make the switch even more of a no-brainer.
    • The heat pump water heater tax credit is available to homeowners who are buying or installing a heat pump water heater through 2032. It is applied for up to 30% of the projected cost.

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air?

If your heat pump is blowing cold air, it’s a good idea to start by looking at your thermostat. Double check that the fan is off and that the temperature gauge is set properly. If the thermostat is A-OK, then check out our blog post on heat pumps blowing cold air to see the other possible causes of your cold calamity!

How do heat pumps work?

Most heat pumps use air to heat and cool your home. These systems remove heat from the air outside to heat your home and then in reverse during the summer to cool your home! And YES, heat can be pulled even when it is VERY cold outside! These systems operate in negative temperatures.

Are heat pumps really worth it in Maine?

Yes, heat pumps really are worth it in Maine. Many Maine homeowners and business owners are choosing heat pumps as their heat source in the winter (and their cooling solution in the summer). Other heating methods like furnaces and natural gas have skyrocketed in pricing over the last decade. In the summer time, it seems that the AC keeps us drowning in utility bills. Heat pumps can be used year round, they are energy efficient, provide ample energy savings, and the cost to use is low.

Can I use a heat pump in my home?

Absolutely. You can use them throughout your home. These units are fantastic for climate control throughout your home. If you’ve just come home from a fun ski trip, but are feeling a little cold, you can turn up the heat in your bedroom (and not worry about everyone else sweating). In fact, heat pumps are an amazing solution for homeowners. They are energy efficient and provide great energy savings.

Can I use a heat pump for a single room?

Yes. These units are made for zone control. Which means, if you are looking to heat up a single room in your house that just can’t seem to stay warm, you certainly can. If you have multiple units, each one can be used for climate control in the room. You might like things a little cooler than Grandma does (currently staying in the guest bedroom), and that’s OKAY!

Can I use my heat pump year round?

Yes, you can use your heat pump year round. They heat in the winter and cool in the summer to keep you and your family comfortable no matter the season.

How much do heat pumps cost?

There is an initial installation cost, and because of the versatility of heat pumps, every home is different. Some homeowners only need one or two rooms with an additional heating source. Other homeowners like to heat and cool their ENTIRE home with them!

Either way, because of the high efficiency rating, Efficiency Maine helps residents pay for their upgrades. You must be a qualified applicant, and once approved, you’ll be happy you did it!
